To promote the art of Aikido in the community through friendly practice.

Aikido at the Health Care Corporation of St. John's began at the South Lecture Room at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital in 2000-2001 led by Tony Cumby. In the fall of 2003, the Aikido class was given its name, Fudoshin Aikido, by Brian Harris, a practicing member at that time. In January of 2004, Tom Alteen Sensei joined the class as Chief Instructor. On July 22, 2004, Fudoshin Aikido moved to the Waterford Hospital Gym, and offically became a registered dojo with the United States Aikido Federation, hence bringing about the birth of Fudoshin Aikikai, currently one of the four official Aikido dojos in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Tony Cumby is presently a Shodan. He has an extensive >30 years martial arts experience in various styles. He has studied Judo, Aikido, Karate and various other forms. He has continued to study the art since 1971. He originally began his training with Graham Burt Sensei (the founder of the first Aikido dojo in Newfoundland in the mid 1960s). As well, Tony has trained with Derm McDonald Sensei (The Aikido Institute of Newfoundland).
